According to the 2011 Georgia Crash Analysis Statistics and Information Report, published by the Georgia Department of Transportation, 24 percent of all highway crash fatalities in Georgia in 2010 were alcohol-related. Pickup truck drivers had the highest percentage of blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) of all drivers involved in fatal accidents. Fatal car crashes involving drivers who were killed showed a higher report of alcohol usage than any other traffic accidents. Those who have been involved in three or more alcohol-related traffic accidents are the most likely to be involved in a fatal alcohol-related accident.
Per a Georgia 2009 High School Youth Risk Behavior Study, 20 percent of students who were surveyed reported that they had ridden in a vehicle with a driver who had been drinking on one or more occasions. Seven percent of all those students surveyed said that they had driven a vehicle themselves while under the influence of alcohol on one or more occasions. Other statistics in the report show that 75 percent of motorcyclists involved in fatal traffic accidents between midnight and three a.m. were alcohol-related. The Atlanta County with the highest rate of alcohol-related fatalities was Fulton, which has had the highest rate for five consecutive years from 2005 through 2009.
