A woman was killed recently when she was struck by a car. A 51-year-old woman—whose identity has not yet been released by police—was walking on the median of a street when a late model sedan left the roadway and hit her. The incident happened around 1:00 in the morning when 29-year-old T.P. was driving his car on a south side Houston street and failed to keep the vehicle on the road. Emergency medical crews and police arrived at the scene of the accident but were unable to resuscitate the woman who was hit. She was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the county Institute of Forensic Sciences for identity verification. The driver of the sedan involved was questioned by police and reportedly showed signs of intoxication. T.P. was taken into custody and has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. Speak with a DWI defense lawyer immediately if you have been arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol.
DWI manslaughter, also known as "intoxication manslaughter" or simply "vehicular manslaughter," is considered a second degree felony offense. The penalties assessed for a conviction are slightly less than in the case of a murder but are nonetheless very severe. T.P. could receive up to 20 years in prison, fined up to $10,000, a minimum of 240 hours of community service as well as other penalties if convicted. Successfully fighting these charges requires skilled legal help with an aggressive drive to get a positive outcome.
