DWI Task Force Targets Bars and their Patrons

A special task force aimed at preventing people from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated is targeting Houston area bars in an attempt to prevent proprietors from continuing to serve alcohol to a patron who appears drunk. The effort comes after a number of recent DWI crashes where the drivers had just come from local bars. In one instance, a man reportedly had consumed 22 beers at a bar before getting behind the wheel and causing a wreck that killed three people on the interstate. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission in co-ordination with several local and state authorities is hoping to prevent these tragic incidents by getting bars to stop over serving alcohol to customers. The general procedure of the task force is for a group of members to visit a bar and point out "highly intoxicated" patrons to the manager so both managers and employees at the establishment become more aware of who should be cut off. Task force members will also approach patrons who appear intoxicated and warn them of the serious consequences that could occur if they drive while intoxicated—in regard to both legal aspects and when it comes to human life. If you have been accused of drunk driving or other DWI charge in the Houston area then contact a DWI defense attorney as soon as possible.
Even a First DWI Arrest Can Mean Major Penalties
If a driver is pulled over and police allegedly find that individual to have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 percent or more, he or she will be instantly taken into custody for driving while intoxicated. A first DWI can involve some significant penalties of up to $2,000 in fines, six months in jail, driver license suspension up to a year, etc. Other circumstances surrounding the alleged DWI can greatly increase these penalties if a conviction is obtained. A very high BAC, accident involving injury or death and other such circumstances can raise the charges to felony DWI.
