Hit-and-Run Leaves Victim Dead In Southern Los Angeles
After the victim in a hit-and-run collision lost his life, police say they identified the primary suspect as a substance abuse counselor from Torrance. The defendant pled not guilty before the court at her arraignment, claiming that she was innocent of the charges of intoxicated manslaughter.
According to court documents released in relation to the case, the incident is alleged to have taken place on November 24th at approximately 11:25 pm. Investigators believe that the suspect was responsible for an unusual and hit-and-run automobile accident that took the life of a pedestrian. The victim, a 31 man from Torrance, was walking along the sidewalk near the intersection of Torrance Boulevard and Madrid Avenue when a vehicle swerved out of control and struck him.
The alleged driver, a 51-year old local woman, is accused of failing to stop after colliding with the pedestrian. Eyewitnesses told the court that the driver continued on for nearly two miles with the victim lodged in her windshield. Despite repeated pleas for help, the car continued on.
Good Samaritans Stop Driver Attempting To Leave Scene
Bystanders were able to stop the vehicle at the nearby intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and 182nd Street. Several witnesses told investigators that they had to swarm the car, surrounding it in order to prevent the woman from driving further. One bystander was able to reach through the window and turn the keys in the ignition, powering down the automobile.
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and began to administer to the victim. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors were unable to save his life. The man was pronounced dead due to complications involving injuries caused by the crash shortly afterward.
The defendant, a drug counselor who works with various alcohol and narcotics recovery groups, has been charged with murder, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and hit-and-run. According to the Los Angeles Superior Court records, she was also charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident in 2010.
