By Restoring Your License after a NC DWI
Aug. 14, 2013 8:50a
One of the penalties for driving while intoxicated in the state of North Carolina is a one-year license suspension for first-time offenders and a four-year suspension for repeat offenders. If your driver's license was not confiscated at the time of your DWI arrest, you must surrender it to the DMV. While your driving privileges are suspended, you are not allowed to drive. If you are caught driving on a suspended license by law enforcement, you face the risk of up to five years of incarceration or an increase in your suspension period.
Once your license suspension term has been fulfilled, you will receive a notice from the DMV on the steps you must take to restore your driver's license. You will be required to pay a restoration fee which is generally $75. If you did not turn in your license at the time of your suspension, the fee will include another $50 as a service fee. You will also be required to take and pass all tests, including a vision test, written test, and road test. You will also be required to provide proof that you enrolled in and completed an alcohol safety school program. Beyond this, you will generally be required to provide proof of financial responsibility to the DMV, called SR-22 insurance. This will be required for three years. If you lapse in carrying SR-22 insurance during the three-year period, your insurance carrier will be required to inform the DMV. Those who are required to install and use an ignition interlock device in their vehicles will also have to provide proof to the DMV that this has been done in order to have their license reinstated.
