A 43 year-old grandmother was recently charged with DWI in Charlotte, North Carolina after crashing her vehicle and injuring all of the family members traveling in the car with her. She also now faces charges of child abuse and reckless endangerment. Besides sustaining injuries herself, her pregnant daughter and three grandchildren were injured, including a 2 year-old in a car seat that was ejected from the vehicle when it flipped over and crashed.
The woman was driving down I-85 when the accident occurred. She apparently swerved on the highway which resulted in the overturn of her car. She and her family members all required hospitalization, two with life-threatening injuries and two with potentially life-threatening injuries.
Minimum sentencing penalties for a first-offense DWI in North Carolina include up to 24 hours in jail, $200 in fines, and a license suspension of 60 days up to one year. DWI penalties can vary, however, based on a range of five levels of the offense, with each level having its own set of factors and standards for sentencing. As in the case above, where children are concerned and where injuries have been caused, other charges may apply as well such as reckless endangerment and child abuse.
