In addition, the penalties of a DWI charge also vary based on if you are a first-time DWI offender or a multiple DWI offender. First-time DWI offenders can face a minimum sentence of 24 hours, a $200 fine, and suspension of their driver's license for up to a year. Second time DWI offenders may face a minimum sentence of four days and suspension of their driver's license between one and four years. Third time DWI offenders may face penalties that include a minimum sentence of 14-30 days, heavy fines, and a suspension of their driver's license ranging from one year to life. In the situation of a second and third time DWI offender, the court may require the installation of an interlock ignition device (IID). Such a device is attached to the ignition of the offender's vehicle and requires that the driver blow into a breathalyzer-type machine before the vehicle starts. If the driver is not below the legal BAC level, the vehicle will not start.
