The deadly accident occurred in Cherokee County after a Kansas man, K.H., was in a high speed chase with local law enforcement. Officers had attempted to pull K.H. over but he sped off on what became an 11-mile chase in which speeds of 100 miles per hour or more were reached. The chase was brought to a tragic end when K.H. crashed into a car on U.S. 69. The car he collided into was being driven by a school teacher and her 13-year-old daughter was in the vehicle as well. Witnesses testified in court that K.H. had been going 98 mph or faster at the time of impact. The 13-year-old died at the scene and her mother died of her injuries six days later. Additional witnesses stated that K.H. had been driving under the influence of alcohol.
The jury on the case found the southeastern Kansas man guilty of two counts of first degree murder after an hour and a half of deliberation. Murder is a capital punishment offense and K.H. could be facing the death penalty when sentencing is assessed.
