The woman who was behind the wheel of a compact sedan that crashed into a Houston Police officer's cruiser has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. The late night accident happened shortly after a police officer had taken a woman into custody on a public intoxication charge. The arrestee had been placed into the squad car after it was determined that she was so intoxicated that she was a danger to herself. The female officer driving the cruiser was transporting the intoxicated woman to a sobriety center at about 3:30 a.m. but the woman had not been properly buckled in with a seatbelt per department policy. The officer was traveling on Chartres Street in central Houston and had a green light when a 21-year-old woman driving a small sedan on Texas Avenue ran a red light and crashed into the cruiser. The force of the impact caused the detainee, 21-year-old C.N., to be thrown from the patrol car. Once the vehicle came to a rest the officer ran to C.N., removed her handcuffs and asked a witness who came to help to keep the woman's legs elevated. Emergency responders arrived and rushed C.N. to the hospital in critical condition. The officer was also transported to the hospital via ambulance for treatment of minor injuries. The driver of the small sedan, N.M., and a passenger had suffered unspecified injuries and were taken to the hospital as well. N.M. reportedly admitted to police that she had been at a local bar drinking and repeatedly said, "shouldn't have been driving". C.N. died of her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital. Investigators with HPD's vehicular Crimes and Internal Affairs are looking into the accident further. If you were involved in a car crash and accused of driving while intoxicated then you need the help of a criminal defense lawyer right away.
