A foreman with the Highway Department recently appeared in court for charges connected to a two car collision he was involved in. V.G., who has been working for the city department since 1975, was not driving a city vehicle at the time of the wreck. The 65-year-old man had come to work at 7:00 a.m. but later requested to leave because he wasn't feeling well. He reportedly went to a local sports bar. One his way home from that location he crossed his sedan into oncoming traffic and crashed into a car being driven by a 27-year-old woman. Paramedics and authorities arrived and transported the woman to the hospital for neck and back injuries. Officers spoke with V.G. who said a car in front of him slowed to make a turn and he had attempted to go around it by crossing the center line. Arrest reports show that he admitted to having had two vodka drinks earlier at the sports bar. He also said he had taken his prescription drugs—a painkiller, muscle relaxant and an anti-anxiety drug. He agreed to perform field sobriety tests but was unable to conduct two of the physical coordination tests because he had herniated discs from a previous injury incident. A breathalyzer test was performed and showed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.122 percent. He was taken into custody for having a BAC over the 0.08 percent legal limit after he was checked over for injuries at a local medical center. He has been charged with driving under the influence and faces traffic citations for operating left of center and crossing into the opposite lane of traffic.
