Texas State Representative Arrested for DWI

A Texas Democratic state representative from El Paso faces a DWI charge today after being involved in a car crash in which she and two other people were injured. The accident occurred in Austin where the state representative hit another vehicle which then hit a bicyclist around 2 a.m. on March 14, 2013. The representative as well as the person in the second vehicle received treatment at a local hospital for minor injuries. The bicyclist escaped with minor scrapes and bruises. N. G., the state representative is a lawyer serving her second term in the Texas House of Representatives. Her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at the time of her arrest was apparently 0.164 percent which is more than twice the legal limit. This came as a result of having two drinks within an hour according to N.G.'s arrest statements.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the city of Austin experienced 12 fatalities and 403 serious injuries in 2011 due to drunk driving. In alcohol-related incidents, Dallas experienced 35 fatalities and 478 serious injuries; Houston had 85 fatalities with 387 serious injuries; and San Antonio saw 45 fatalities with 399 serious injuries in the same year. In 2011, the state of Texas experienced 490 alcohol-related traffic fatalities and 5,543 alcohol-related serious traffic injuries.
