Earlier this year, Huntington Beach City Council members decided to vote against allowing the police department to post mug shots on Facebook of individuals who had gotten arrested for DUI in California. The original intent of the site was to make those who had been arrested for DUI feel shame in the hopes that it would act as a deterrent to any further violations.
Specific Concerns on Postings
One council member made a suggestion of putting the names and faces up of those who had been arrested more than once for a DUI on Facebook though his goal originally was to have all who had been arrested for DUI to be posted. Police opposed the plan as they felt it would create alienation with residents in the area.
Other council members felt that it would damage the city's image and possibly cause embarrassment to family members who had no involvement with drinking and driving. Other legal concerns came up as well from lawyers and privacy advocates with reference to citing the presumption of one being innocent until proven guilty. Huntington Beach has a population of about 200,000 and has the highest ranking of alcohol related traffic deaths in the state in comparison to other cities of similar size.
