Glendale Officer Placed On Administrative Leave During Inquiry
After being taken into custody, a lieutenant with the Glendale Police Department has been temporarily remanded to paid vacation while her case is being investigated. The woman, a veteran law enforcement officer, was involved in a car accident in Phoenix that led to her arrest.
Officials announced in a report to the press that the Phoenix Police Department was alerted to a single car automobile accident in the early hours of the morning earlier in September. At approximately 1:15 AM on Friday, a vehicle was reported stuck on a parking block near Bethany Home Road and Seventh Avenue. When officers responded to the incident, they discovered the suspect behind the wheel of the car.
Investigation Could Lead To Jail Sentence For Officer
The 39-year old woman told the officers that she was an off-duty police lieutenant with the Glendale force. Authorities reported that they became concerned that the woman was intoxicated after speaking with her, and administered a series of field sobriety tests. After the suspect failed to perform to the officers' satisfaction, she was taken into custody.
Authorities have confirmed that they performed a blood alcohol test on the suspect, but have declined to release the results until they have completed their investigation. Should she be found guilty of driving while drunk, the lieutenant will be penalized according to Arizona's DUI laws, which are some of the strictest in the United States. A first time offender can expect a minimum sentence of 10 days in jail, as well as a minimum fine of $250 and installation of an interlock ignition device, which requires the driver to breathe into a sensor to start the car.
