California Has Declining DUI Roadway Fatalities

While 2,715 DUI case fatalities seems like a high number, it actually represents a decline from the previous year.

According to the Office of Traffic Safety, California has experienced its fifth year in a row in declining roadway fatalities. In 2009, 3,801 fatalities were reported; in 2010, the number went down 12 percent to 2,715. In 2005, California saw its highest level of fatalities at 4,333 over a one-year period. In 2010, thanks to a grant from the OTS, officers in Visalia conducted 12 DUI saturation patrols and 30 DUI checkpoints.

Although alcohol is a major contributing factor to roadway fatalities, in nearly 40 percent of all accidents, other factors are to blame. These factors include speeding and the increased use of cell phones, namely while texting, that have been cited in roadway accidents and deaths throughout the state.
