Police Believe DUI Efforts Worked Over Holidays

Police in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties believe that poor weather, fewer officers on patrol and smarter drivers decreased the number of arrests during the annual holiday season crackdown this year. Since the state of California is in a financial crisis police departments around the state have been forced to cut back on officers and shifts.

The "Avoid" campaigns, which run for seventeen days each year, include law enforcement personnel from 21 agencies in Alameda County and 25 agencies in Contra Costa County.  They set up sobriety checkpoints in various locations where vehicles are stopped to determine whether drivers are licensed and sober.

This campaign also includes courtroom stings where officers detained those who have suspended licenses driving away from the courtroom; saturation patrols where extra units of officers are assigned to search for drunken drivers; and warrant sweeps to get those individuals who have failed to appear in court.
