San Francisco to Crack Down on People with DUI Warrants

In the city of San Francisco, the California Highway Patrol says that it plans to aggressively seek out and arrest those who have outstanding warrants for driving under the influence (DUI).

The California Highway Patrol has announced that it will simultaneously conduct multi-county DUI warrant sweeps in an effort to find drunk driving offenders that ignore obligations to appear in court.

CHP Golden Gate Division Chief Teresa Becher said in a statement, "Every year, lives are lost due to people who choose to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs."

She said that statewide, 790 people were killed during collisions where alcohol was a factor in 2008.  Last year, the California Highway Patrol arrested more than 94,000 drivers and motorcyclists for DUI related offenses.

"The CHP has an obligation to keep California roads safe and these warrant sweeps are part of our life-saving mission," she stated.

Funding for the sweep has been provided by a grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the NHSTA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
