Two Massachusetts Police Honored Again By Group
The anti-drunk driving organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD, held a ceremony honoring police for their work enforcing DUI and OUI laws in 2010, reports the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
After previously honoring the two law enforcement officers for their efforts in 2009, MADD decided to offer them the same reward again this year, due to what they said was outstanding effort in enforcing laws against underage drinking and operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Both men are recent additions to the Amherst police department, having joined in 2006 and 2009. Both men were together responsible for almost a fifth of all DUI and OUI arrests made by the department in 2010, with a combined total of 21 arrests out of the total 108.
Organization Honors Commitment Across State
The ceremony was held over breakfast on Wednesday, May 18th. MADD gave the two men Drive For Life awards, symbolizing the policemen’s commitment to saving lives from alcohol related car accidents. In addition to the two men from Amherst, more than 70 law enforcement officers and state troopers from all over the state of Massachusetts were given honors and awards to recognize their dedication and service last year.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving was founded in 1980 as a non-profit group to advocate stricter DUI laws and support those who have lost loved ones to alcohol related incidents. The founder was motivated to create the organization after her daughter was slain in a tragic accident involving a drunk driver.
