The topic of whether or not the NFL Franchise the Washington Redskins should change their team name due to its offensive nature towards Native Americans has been a hot bed media issue for a while now.
The Redskins have held that the team name honors Native Americans, while critics allege that the name is racist and offensive toward Native Americans. Even politicians have strong feelings on the topic. As reported by theNew York Times earlier this year 50 senators, including majority leader Harry Reid signed a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell asking in the strongest possible terms that he change the team name.
When Jacob Close, a 25 year old residing in Pennsylvania College, was asked his opinion on the topic by a reporter his response along with his photo were published in a local paper. Close's photo was recognized by the police and he was arrested for an outstanding warrant pertaining to a drunk driving incident in Ithaca, New York. Seems all publicity is not good publicity. He is being held on $25,000 bail until the time he can be extradited to New York.
