According to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), approximately a third of all drivers arrested or convicted of drunk driving are repeat offenders and 50 to 75 percent of convicted drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license. In the case of a Missouri man who was recently arrested for DWI in St. Louis, these statistics bear out. The 53 year-old man with the initials J. A. H. was stopped by law enforcement for a traffic offense which led to his 11th arrest for DWI. The man has since been charged as a chronic DWI offender as well as for driving with a suspended or revoked license. He is being held on $100,000 bond. St. Louis County police have stated that he has 10 prior convictions of driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license.
In Missouri, a driver who receives a second DWI, irrespective of the length of time between convictions, will generally have his or her license revoked for a year. A driver who is convicted of a subsequent DWI within a five-year period may face losing his or her license for five years. At the end of the five-year period, he or she will have to petition the court in the county where the conviction took place to seek a license reinstatement. A Missouri driver who is convicted three or more times on DWI charges may be subject to a license revocation period of 10 years and will also be required to petition the court. In both cases, the convicted driver must register with the Missouri Automated Criminal History Site for a criminal history check as part of the process.
