Police Chief Says Bar to Blame
Popular establishment Baja Sharkeez has recently been targeted by police, reports the Huntington Beach Independent. In a 22-month span, police arrested more than 70 customers of the bar for driving under the influence (DUI). Authorities blame the bar's policies for the rash of arrests.
Sharkeez first came under investigation after the state department's district administrator Dan Hart received a concerned letter from Police Chief Ken Small, describing the pattern of DUI arrests linking back to the bar. Small cited the ownership's "indifferent attitude towards public safety." He also claims to have notified management every time a patron was caught driving intoxicated.
Owner Fights Back
The owner of Sharkeez, Ron Newman, defended himself against the chief's allegations. Though he owns four other locations, one in Newport Beach, none have had similar problems. "We don't serve anybody that's overly intoxicated. I can't tell if you had two or three drinks. If you're not obviously intoxicated, we can't tell. If someone is obviously intoxicated, we cut them off," Ron asserts. "We have a perfect record inside the operation."
Thanks to the investigation, Ron claims police officers now wait outside his bar to arrest patrons. Other downtown establishments, such as the Hurricanes Bar and Grill, which was linked to 52 DUI arrests in the same 22 month period, have received less police attention.
