A high school football coach is facing more than a DWI charge, as he has violated his school district's "Coaching Code of Ethics" and will remain on suspension until he again meets the "citizenship standards and guidelines" as decreed by the school's administration, and as reported by the Savannah Reporter.
Savannah Head Football coach C.S. was charged with DWI, a class B misdemeanor, on August 4. Platte County records show that he was arrested by sheriffs at 2:08 a.m. at Interstate 29 in Kansas City and placed in the Platte County jail. A surety bond was posted and he was released later the same day.
Along with the DWI charge, C.S. was also charged with ""failure to drive within a single lane on a roadway having 3 or more lanes", which is also a misdemeanor.
Steve Shanker, C.S.'s attorney, appeared with him in court on September 19. Shanker entered a plea of not guilty for his client and requested a continuance. The judge granted his request and the next court date was scheduled for November 7.
Since the August 4 arrest very few members of the public were aware of C.S.'s charges. However, on September 20, students made reference to the incident on social networks. Reporters that contacted B.H., the Athletic Director at the school, said that he claimed to know nothing about the charges. The next day, on September 21, a meeting was called between the football team and the school's administrators.
It was then that the team was officially informed that C.S. had been suspended from his coaching duties but would remain on staff as a physical education teacher.
C.S. has appeared on televised reports to discuss his arrest.
C.S. then moved up his court date to September 26 and pleaded guilty to DUI.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. M. released this statement on behalf of the Savannah school district, "Mr. (C.S.), Savannah High School football coach has been indefinitely suspended from his coaching duties as of September 21, 2012, due to violations of the Savannah R-III School District 'Coaching Code of Ethics.' In upholding the citizenship standards for Savannah High School athletes and our coaches, Mr. (C.S.) will be considered eligible for return once citizenship standards and guidelines have been deemed met by district administration."
An interim Head Coach has been named.
Most cases of driving under the influence tried in Platte County, if the person's blood alcohol is not over .10 percent, results in a suspended sentence, 2-year probation, alcohol education, community service and appearing before a victim's impact panel.
C.S. stated that he had attended a Kansas City Royals game and was on his way home when he was pulled over by members of the Platte County Sheriff's Department.
