Father Accused of Drunk Driving in Accident that Kills Daughters

A father with the initials A.J. was panicked when he called 9-1-1 on a dark night last week. He babbled into the line in slightly slurred speech, saying that two of his daughters were in the back seat of a vehicle he had just crashed. In two words, he explained what had happened: "they're dead."

The DeKalb County police in Georgia said that A.J. was drunk when he crashed his car into a wooded area on the side of the highway. He had two boys and two girls riding along with him at the time. He lost control of the vehicle and it spun off of the Highway 78. Because of his impaired condition, A.J. wasn't able to fix the car's course before it slammed into trees.

In his 9-1-1 call, A.J. explained that the entire back of the car was crushed in, smashing his two daughters. He said that he called back and there was no answer. He then tried to crawl towards the back of the vehicle with a flashlight but wasn't able to do so. According to the police, A.J.'s eyes were bloodshot and his speech was lazy. His breath reeked of alcohol. The police report reads that A.J. was on his way home from his brother's house when the crash occurred.

He had been drinking beers while watching a NASCAR race with his brother about an hour before. A.J.'s intention had been to pick up his wife and then return back to his house. In conflicting accounts, A.J. first told police that two speeding vehicles lifted his car off the ground and hurled it into the woods. Later, he rephrased his story, saying that he had been pushed doff the road by an aggressive driver. The law enforcement officers don't think that anyone else was actually involved in the crash.
