Man Ordered to Wear Sign: "I Killed (A.C.P.)While Driving Drunk"

Wearing a sign with the name of the man he killed as "shock probation" was one of many orders placed on M.G. for the DUI-related death of A.C.P. last June, as reported by ABC News, the Houston Chronicle, and several other media outlets.

M.G., 39, ran a red light before crashing into A.C.P., 20, and causing his death.

Harris County Court-at-Law Judge Michael R. Fields ordered M.G. to spend 90 days in prison and, upon his release, ordered him to wear a sign around his neck that read, "I killed (A.C.P.) while driving drunk."

The sign was to be worn on four consecutive Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. while standing at the scene of the crime.

The Houston Chronicle reported that beyond the prison time and ordered time at the crash scene, M.G. must also wear an alcohol monitoring device on his ankle and display a framed photograph of A.C.P.'s car, following the wreck, in a prominent place in his home's living room.

April 21 was the first day that M.G. wore the sign for his stint at the crash site. A couple of A.C.P.'s friends were also on hand that first Saturday. They stood at a distance, across the street from M.G.

One friend said, "It's sad to see him in disguise and a hat and sunglasses just standing there with his family while we're sitting here and don't have (A.C.P.) here" and the other added, "For killing one of my best friends I don't think it's like enough. Going to jail only 90 days and then you come out here and carry a sign for four consecutive Saturdays, it's not enough for taking someone's life."

In a transcript taken from the April 3 sentencing, Judge Fields said, "Mr. (M.G.), I have considered what the witnesses had to say. I have looked at the state's exhibits and, and quite frankly, I am concerned about you and this decision to place you on shock probation. You make me nervous, and the reason you make me nervous is I believe what the witnesses said about your behavior that evening: That you were, even after killing someone, still looking to get more alcohol. This is not your first DWI."

The crash occurred on June 25, 2011, at approximately 1:37 a.m. in the intersection of Spring Cypress and Huffmeister. M.G.'s van, after running a red light, crashed into the Mustang that A.C.P. was driving. The impact of the collision threw A.C.P. from his car. When paramedics arrived on scene, A.C.P. was pronounced dead.

A statement from the Harris County Sheriff's Office read, "The defendant had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. The defendant failed a sobriety test and was arrested for Driving while Intoxicated."
