DUI Arrests Increase by 6% with California Program

Avoid the 12, a program aimed at lessening the number of drunk drivers on the road in California, has cracked down on drunk driving in the state. In one county, DUI arrests went up by a total of 6% when Avoid the 12 launched an 18-day crackdown on drunk driving over the summer. All in all, 200 arrests were made during the course of the crackdown, an increase of 11 arrests over the previous summer.

The crackdown was part of a national effort sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The tagline for the crackdown was "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over." Avoid the 12 will have another 20 day crackdown to limit the number of holiday drunk drivers starting in mid-December as well as a concentrated effort over Halloween weekend.

The program is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Perhaps in part due to the efforts of Avoid the 12, only one DUI death was reported in the county that was cracked down upon this summer.
