New Legislation Could Mean Tougher DUI Penalties

If a new bill is passed in the Senate this week then first-time DUI offenders will be required to have an interlocking ignition device installed in their cars.
At this time the DUI penalties state that only second offenses are required to get the interlocking device. This device measures blood-alcohol levels by requiring drivers to blow into it before starting their car.
The bill, also known as Senate Bill 529, will require first-time offenders to get new licenses with "interlock required" printed on them. This will be key in helping law enforcement officials know whether a driver is meant to have an interlock device installed on the car they are driving. Not only would the offender not be allowed to drive without the interlock device installed, but they will also have to pay to have it installed on their vehicle.
This bill is also entitled the "Erin Swezey Act" in honor of Swezey who died at age 20 when a drunken driver struck her vehicle head-on and killed her outside of Oklahoma City.
If you've been charged with DUI, now is the time to consult with a DUI lawyer.
