Checkpoint to Cut Down on DUI and Accidents

In an effort to cut down on drunk drivers, the one police department's traffic unit announced that it would hold a checkpoint next week.

By announcing where the DUI/Driver's License checkpoint would be and at what time, police hope to deter intoxicated people from getting behind the wheel. Checkpoints like these have been proven to cut down on fatal accidents and injuries caused by drunk driving. Some research even shows that publicized checkpoints can cut down on DUI accidents by as much as 20 percent.

Any driver that goes through the checkpoint can be asked to provide a driver's license and/or conduct a field sobriety test. Those drivers that are found to be intoxicated can expect to pay the criminal penalties, including suspension of driving privileges, insurance premium hikes, jail time, DUI class and other expenses that can add up to as much as $10,000.
