Boating Under the Influence

Just as a person can be arrested for driving under the influence, they can also be arrested for boating under the influence (BUI). With an estimated 17 million boats throughout the U.S., it is important for all boaters to ensure they adhere to boating safety laws and guidelines every time they're on the water.
In every state, it is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Some states have set the legal limit a little higher at .10%, while others consider a person too intoxicated to operate a boat when their BAC reaches .08%. And like DUI, there are penalties associated with boating under the influence. While the degree of the penalties for BUI may change depending on the state you have been charged in, universal penalties include fines, possible license suspension, time in jail, community service, and mandatory attendance at alcohol education classes.
If you have been arrested for boating under the influence, it’s important to consult an experienced
DUI/DWI lawyer right away. Many DWI/DUI attorneys have experience in BUI defense, and can fight your charges to help you avoid a BUI conviction. Furthermore, an attorney can inform you of your legal rights, go over possible defense strategies, and provide you with trusted advice and guidance throughout each stage of your case. The last thing you want or need is for a BUI conviction to appear on your driving record and/or your criminal record. Let an attorney help you see that it doesn’t.
