Springville Teenager Dies in Suspected DUI Crash

Last week Friday, police say that a suspected DUI crash led to the death of a teenager in Springville.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 22 year old driver by the name of Robert Van Winkle had been driving a 2003 Ford Truck northbound on Balch Park Road.  He had two passengers in his vehicle, his 17 year old brother Jacob Van Winkle and 18 year old Justin Adams.  At 1:45 AM, Van Winkle lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree.  Police now believe that alcohol played a role in the crash.

The California Highway Patrol said that the 17 year old died at the scene of the accident.  Adams had to be airlifted to Community Regional Medical in Fresno and he is reported to have suffered moderate injuries.

The driver received medical treatment at Sierra View District Hospital.  Later, he was placed under arrest for DUI and vehicular manslaughter.  His bail was set at $100,000.
