Police in California Handing Out Turkeys at DUI Checkpoint

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, the officers from the police department in Salinas, California will be conducting their annual Turkey & DUI Checkpoint at a location that is yet to be specified.  This is the department's 7th annual Turkey & DUI Checkpoint event.  During the evening hours of Tuesday, November 24th, they will be handing out turkeys at the undisclosed location in the city of Salinas.

The Salinas police department purposely conducts this event during the Thanksgiving celebration period every year in an attempt to reduce instances of drinking and driving.

Another reason the department conducts a DUI checkpoint this time each year is to give impoverished families turkeys.  Drivers that make it through the DUI checkpoint successfully will be given one turkey by officers.  The turkeys are donated by the community.

In order to avoid giving more than one turkey to families, the police department requests that the public refrain from going through their checkpoint more than once.  They say this will promote holiday goodwill while reducing congestion from traffic.
