In Contra Costa County, law enforcement agencies have revealed that they will increase DUI enforcement starting this Friday. The increase in patrol units is expected to last until the end of Labor Day weekend.
For 18 days, from the dates of 8/21 to 9/7, police agencies will conduct saturation patrols throughout the county. Additionally, they will enforce any outstanding DUI warrants. The agencies also plan to have four sobriety checkpoints in place. Checkpoints are scheduled for August 26th and September 6th in Pittsburg, August 29th in Martinez and September 4th in El Cerrito.
In 2008, it was reported that 1,029 people died during
DUI accidents. That was a 9% decrease from 2007. Even though the rate has decreased, the sheriff's spokesman, Jimmy Lee said that, "the number of deaths is unacceptable." He also told news sources that, "people have to take responsibility because this is totally preventable."
