Local news sources are reporting that during Seattle's Seafair weekend, several people were caught by law enforcement
boating under the influence (BUI). Each year, the state of Washington hosts Seafair weekend, which attracts large masses of boaters and visitors.
Due to the large amount of boaters, Seattle police increased patrol units and heightened security. Area police sent many patrols to the waterways of Lake Washington and Lake Union to monitor boating behaviors. Police were on continual look out for people who were operating boats while intoxicated. Prior to sending patrols to the area, departments issued several public warnings. Despite the multiple messages, people still chose to disobey the law.
During the weekend, police set up a command post on Mercer Island so that they could easily process those who had been arrested for BUI. Police claim that each year, many people are injured or killed during BUI accidents, which is why they decided to increase patrols during Seafair weekend.
In the state of Washington, BUI is a very serious criminal offense that can lead to several different legal consequences for convicted offenders.
