Can Prescription Drugs Land You a DUI?

When you think of driving under the influence, you may think of getting behind the wheel of a car after consuming alcohol or using drugs such as marijuana. But did you know that driving while you are taking prescription drugs can also be considered driving under the influence? Any substance that may inhibit reaction time can cause a driver to be arrested on a DUI charge.

Prescription Drugs Can Lead to DUI Arrest

Just because you are taking a drug with the permission of a doctor does not mean you are doing so with the permission of the law. Mixing any type of drug and driving can lead a driver face DUI charges.

Some common reactions to prescription drugs that can cause unsafe driving are:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Slowed reaction times
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Inability to pay attention

Examine the side effects of any medication you may be taking to determine whether or not it is safe to drive. Many of these side effects can be worsened after drinking alcohol, so even if you only have one drink, you may want to think twice about driving.

Since different drugs can affect people differently, there is no consistent way to measure drug impairment, and no way to determine what rates in driver's blood stream elevates the risk. When you are pulled over on suspicion of driving under the influence, law enforcement may call a drug recognition expert to the scene to examine eye movements, behavior, and other cues that will determine whether or not you should be behind the wheel.

Being caught driving under the influence of prescription drugs can carry the same consequences as driving under the influence of alcohol, which includes license suspension, fines, and potential jail time. You will need legal representation if you have been charged with a DUI to avoid these serious consequences.
