Police Prepare for Heightened Patrols on Independence Day

The Fourth of July is fast approaching, and police forces all throughout the United States are already gearing up for the DUI arrests that will most likely take place over that weekend. Whenever individuals have a day off work and a reason to celebrate, there is normally a higher probability that they will drink and drive. Police forces throughout the United States want to attempt to lower the possibility of DUI accidents over the Fourth of July weekend. In North Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety says that they are going to be putting more highway patrol officers on the road and conducting more drunk driving patrols.

On Friday, the Department of Public Safety plans to increase the number of patrols in the area at high-risk locations such as crowded cities and places with an abundance of restaurants and bars. The DPS says that they want to be prepared to pull over anyone who is displaying signs of intoxication so that they can protect families that are celebrating o this holiday. The DPS reports that the Fourth of July period is one of the deadliest weeks on Texas Highways. Most of the crashes that take place during this time are related to alcohol. The DPS director reports that drunk driving can turn a time of celebration and joy into a tragedy in a matter of moments.

The DPS officials say that last year, there were at least 1,294 DUI arrests during the Fourth of July holiday enforcement period. The troopers in the area also handed out more than 13,000 speeding citations and made about 750 fugitive arrests. They also made about 500 felony arrests within the same period. Increased holiday enforcement in Texas will begin on July 28th and carry through to the end of the week. The 10-day incased patrol will end on July 7th.

The Pennsylvania Driving Under the Association has announced that both drivers and boaters need to be cautious during the Fourth of July and make wise choices in order to avoid penalties. The Pennsylvania officials also noted that Drug Recognition Experts will be out on the roads during this time in the state looking for anyone who may be under the influence of either illegal or prescription narcotics. In the state of Pennsylvania last year, reports show that there were at least 355 impairment-related crashes that resulted in at least 20 deaths.

In Colorado, there are reports that the Colorado State Patrol in addition to 82 other law enforcement agencies are increasing DUI enforcements from Friday June 29th through July 5th in an attempt to lower the amount of DUI accidents and deaths on the road. Colorado's Department of Transportation has announced that they will set up at least six DUI checkpoints and officials will work overtime. Last year, the state made 551 DUI arrests during this time period, which they call one of the deadliest holiday weekends of the year. In 2011, Colorado announced that July was the worst month for DUI deaths with 24 people killed that week alone.

If you are pulled over this next week by a Fourth of July DUI Patrol, then you will want to be polite to the officers and avoid panicking. You do not need to answer any questions about drinking, as you have the right to remain silent on the subject. You also don't need to make any unnecessary statements about where you were or if you have been consuming any alcohol. Also, if pulled over you are not legally required to take a field sobriety test. You can refuse when asked if you comply with this.
