UFC Fighter Jon “Bone” Jones Convicted of a DWI

Everyone who drinks alcohol is at risk to a DWI, even professional athletes. According to a recent newscast on Yahoo Sports, the UFC light heavyweight champion Jon "Bone" Jones was convicted of a DWI on Tuesday morning. The fighter was involved in a collision on May 19th, and police recognized the symptoms of drunk driving when they arrived on the scene. Jones crashed his 2012 Bentley into a telephone pole because he was under the influence of alcohol. Luckily, no other cars were involved in the accident.

Jones openly admitted his faults as part of a plea bargain with the District Attorney's office in the Binghamton City Court in New York. Now, he will need to make do without his license, which was automatically suspended when he plead guilty to the crime. In addition to license suspension, Jones will receive a fine and a conditional discharge. This means that he will need to obey the probationary conditions set before him, but if he adheres to these rules the court will recognize that his sentence has already been served. If he fails to obey the rules set forth in this agreement, then he will be issued his original penalty. This might include jail time and higher fees.

Jones will be back in court on June 19th for a final sentencing. During that time, he must complete an alcohol abuse and dependency assessment. In order to make statements about his situation, Jones turned to his Facebook page. He vented about his disappointment and embarrassment concerning the DWI charge. He explained that he felt he was being further discouraged by fans' reactions to the DUI, and admitted that he had "screwed up big time." Jones claims that he is a Christian, which further caused the outrage that surrounded his DUI.

Most Christians abstain from alcohol, and the DWI damaged his reputation within the circle of people who share his faith. Jones still thanked the supporters who were willing to stick with him through this hard time. Because of the many digital methods of communicating, people have been able to publically express their opinion of "Bones" Jones' DUI. Some fans say that they lost all respect of him because of the offense, while others believe that he redeemed himself with his humble statements and his willingness to apologize.

The president of UFC appears to have forgiven the fighter already. Dana White admitted that Jones was a good kid and said that this sort of thing happens to a lot of people. He hopes that Jones will be able to educate others on the foolishness of drunk driving by speaking from experience. The UFC has decided that they won't publicly punish Jones for his actions with any sort of embarrassment, like revoking his UFC sponsorship. Still, they said that they do believe that it takes more to be a champion then to be an expert in martial arts. They hope that Jones will use this experience to remind others of what not to do.

DUIs are embarrassing and irritating. Regardless of whether or not you are famous, you don't want other people knowing that you made a poor choice and were caught driving under the influence. If you are convicted of a DUI, you will probably lose your license and have to rely on friends, family, and public transportation in order to get around. In addition, you may have to pay expensive fines that you can't afford, or spend time in jail. There is also a chance that you will be required to serve hours of community service and attend rehabilitation groups. If you were convicted of a DUI, then you want a DUI attorney to help you. Choose someone who can represent you in court and help you receive the best outcome possible.
