Ms. America 2010 Arrested For A DUI

According to the Detroit News, former Miss USA Rima Fakih will soon go to trial for a DUI accusation. Rima was the 2010 winner of the Miss America beauty pageant and became the first Arab-American to win the crown. Due to curfew misdemeanors and a few other scandals, Rima has not always boasted a clean track record. When the rumor started that she was arrested for a DUI two and a half weeks ago, investigators jumped right on the story. Allegedly, the beauty queen was pulled over at 2:15 a.m. on Saturday, January 4th, and charged with misdemeanor drunk driving. Entertainment News states that Fakih realized that she was intoxicated and proceeded to pull over to the side of the road before she was confronted by a police officer. She was driving with another friend, who was also drunk.

The US Weekly writes that the beauty queen was arrested in Highland Park, Michigan and Fox News states that she had a blood-alcohol content of 0.20 percent, over twice Michigan's legal limit of 0.08%. Still, the Highland Police Department avoided officially confirming Rima's arrest. When the event first transpired, Rima used her Twitter account to let everyone know that she had not been arrested and was not even in Michigan. A few days later, the Tweet was deleted. Her message read "Let's clear things up now… I'm NOT in Michigan and I'm NOT in jail. Wrong Fakih."

Her lawyer later admitted that the tweet was a lie to try and avoid press confrontation. He also suggests that Rima's friends, family, and assistants who take care of her public relations may have posted the tweet on her behalf before they were aware of the situation. The Michigan court refused to give her more time to prepare her defense, and she will face her trial sometime this month. Her lawyer states that she is "very apologetic" and that this should not be something that defines her. The lawyer also states that Rima has no blemishes on her criminal record at present.

Fakih used her Twitter account to express that she would rather talk to the media herself and clear up any rumors. Donald Trump, who owns the Miss USA pageant, says that Rima was a wonderful Miss USA and that he is very surprised to hear about this unfortunate accusation. This is not the first time that Rima has challenged pageant protocol. She told US Weekly that as an unofficial ambassador for the United States; sometimes she just wants to "let it all go." The Huffington Post points out that other than the Twitter messages from Fakih and her lawyer, no one has confirmed the details of the story. If she is convicted of her crime, Rima could face up to 93 days in jail as well as fines, court fees, and community service.

Getting arrested for drunk driving is debilitating and embarrassing. A DUI charge can take up valuable time and money as you try to prove your innocence. DUI convicts can spend months in prison, and spend years without their driver's licenses, depending on the circumstances. Anyone with a blood-alcohol content of over 0.08 percent can be legally arrested for this crime. However, sometimes blood and breath tests can be inaccurate, or police may not have handled the situation fairly. If you have been convicted of a DUI, the best way to handle you situation is by staying calm and quiet. Wait to answer any questions until you have consulted a lawyer. A well-educated and professional DUI attorney may be able to prove your innocence, which could help you to get back on track and back to normal in no time.
